Game engine

Bevy

Bevy is a Rust game engine built on ECS. You compose systems instead of placing nodes in an editor. That is the feature and the cost.

Overview

Bevy’s examples are Rust files: input, sprites, and schedules. There is no Godot-style editor as the main path. If that sentence is a relief, Bevy is worth a weekend. If you wanted to paint a tilemap, it is the wrong week.

The engine is MIT and changes on a 0.x cadence. A tutorial written for 0.13 will not compile on 0.19 without a migration. Pin the version in Cargo.toml to the example you cloned.

Use Bevy when Rust and data-oriented design are already how you want to work. Use Godot when you want a scene you can click.

Business model
MIT and code-first. There is no paid editor tier. Versions move quickly; 0.19 is the 2026 baseline and upgrades are real work.
Releases
Several 0.x releases a year. Read the migration guide before you copy an example from an older version.
Editor platforms
Windows, macOS, Linux
Export targets
Windows, macOS, Linux, Web
Languages
Rust

2D/3D
VR
Possible through community crates. Not a supported product template.
AR
No first-party AR product.
Visual scripting
No. You write Rust systems.
Beginners
No, unless Rust is already comfortable. The engine is a good second step, not a first programming environment.
Learning curve
Steep. ECS and Rust ownership show up before the game does.
Graphics
Capable 2D and 3D for programmers. Not a lighting suite you art-direct from an editor.
Team size
Rust programmers, usually a small group.

Where it fits

  • MIT, ECS, and Rust’s compile-time checks.
  • Examples are small programs, not hidden editor state.
  • 2D and 3D without a vendor license.

Where it does not

  • Rust is required. That removes most beginners.
  • Breaking changes between 0.x versions are normal.
  • Editor-based content work is not the workflow.

Questions

Is Bevy good for a first engine?

Only if Rust is already your language. Otherwise start with Godot or Phaser and come back.

Does Bevy have an editor?

Not as the way you build the game. The primary interface is Rust code and the asset files you load.

Which version are the samples on?

Check Cargo.toml in the repository. This page’s baseline is 0.19. Older jams will say so in their README.

What is a small Bevy game to read?

The Tetris and Typey Birb repositories are jam-sized. Foxtrot is a larger 3D character setup.
