Which game engine should you use?
Six questions on this page. A top-3 shortlist and source you can clone. No account.
Question 1 of 6
Are you making 2D, 3D, or both?
How the shortlist is scored
Every engine in the catalog is scored, then the top three are kept. Points come from dimension, platform, language, experience, project size, and license. The result page lists the rules that fired.
What each answer changes
1Are you making 2D, 3D, or both?
Choosing 2D raises Godot, Phaser, Defold, GDevelop, LÖVE, and TIC-80. Choosing 3D raises Unreal Engine, Unity, Three.js, Babylon.js, PlayCanvas, Stride, and O3DE. Choosing both looks for engines marked 2D/3D, including Godot, Unity, Bevy, Cocos Creator, libGDX, and MonoGame.
2Where should it run?
Web raises Phaser, Three.js, Babylon.js, PlayCanvas, GDevelop, and Construct 3. Mobile raises Unity, Godot, Defold, and Cocos Creator. PC matches engines that export to Windows, macOS, or Linux. Multiple platforms favor a long export list.
3Which language do you prefer?
GDScript points at Godot. C# points at Unity, MonoGame, and Stride, and also lifts Godot. JavaScript or TypeScript points at Phaser, Three.js, Babylon.js, PlayCanvas, and Cocos Creator. C++ points at Unreal Engine, O3DE, and OGRE. No preference skips this bonus.
4How much experience do you have?
Starting from zero raises Godot, TIC-80, GDevelop, Construct 3, Phaser, and Defold. If you have already shipped games, the quiz leaves the smallest runtimes alone and keeps the deeper toolsets in the ranking.
5How big is the first project?
A demo or a jam raises TIC-80, Phaser, Godot, LÖVE, and Defold. A medium project raises Unreal Engine and Unity, with a smaller lift for Godot, Stride, and O3DE. A small game adds no bonus of its own.
6Must it be open source and commercially friendly?
Yes adds points for MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, Zlib, and ISC. That includes Godot, Bevy, Phaser, raylib, LÖVE, and the other engines on those licenses. Unity stays proprietary and Unreal Engine stays source-available. Both remain in the ranking without this bonus.
What you get after the last answer
The last answer opens a result page with three engines, the reasons each one matched, and source you can clone. Specs and license live on the engine page.

Already decided between two engines?
A comparison page lines up language, license, dimension, and the first project to clone.
Questions about this quiz
- Do I need an account?
- No. The answers live in the result URL, so you can share the shortlist or retake it.
- Does an open-source answer remove Unity and Unreal Engine?
- They stay in the catalog. That answer adds points for MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, Zlib, and ISC. A proprietary or source-available engine can still place when the other answers fit.
- Why only three engines?
- The result is a shortlist. The full catalog stays on the engines page, with source projects for each engine.
- Can I see why an engine ranked?
- Yes. Each result lists the rules that added points, such as a 2D toolset, a web export, or an open license.
- What should I open after the shortlist?
- Open the engine page for the license and export list, then clone a matching project and run it.
